  • 4 cup whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 6 oz semisweet chocolate Finely chopped
  • 0.25 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 0.125 tsp salt
For the Board
  • 2 cup mini marshmallows
  • 8 large marshmallows
  • 8 gingerbread cookies
  • 8 shortbread cookies
  • 6 chocolate sandwich cookies
  • 1 cup chocolate-covered pretzels
  • 0.5 cup semisweet chocolate chunks
  • 0.5 cup white chocolate pieces
  • 0.5 cup mini chocolate chips
  • 0.5 cup crushed peppermint candies
  • 8 peppermint sticks
  • 1 cup whipped cream
  • 0.5 cup caramel sauce
  • 0.5 cup chocolate sauce
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon

Equipment

  • 1 Dutch oven

Method

Make the hot chocolate
  1. Heat the whole milk and heavy cream in a saucepan over medium-low heat until hot but not boiling, keeping the surface from simmering.
  2. Whisk in the chopped semisweet chocolate, cocoa powder, sugar, vanilla extract, and salt until fully combined.
  3. Cook for 3–5 minutes, whisking frequently, until the chocolate melts completely and the mixture becomes smooth.
  4. Pour the hot chocolate into a serving pitcher or insulated carafe for easy serving.
Build the hot chocolate board
  1. Arrange mini and large marshmallows in small bowls on a large serving board so each bowl is easy to reach.
  2. Group the gingerbread cookies, shortbread cookies, chocolate sandwich cookies, and chocolate-covered pretzels around the bowls in separate clusters.
  3. Add the semisweet chocolate chunks, white chocolate pieces, mini chocolate chips, crushed peppermint candies, and peppermint sticks in separate clusters for clear separation.
  4. Place small bowls of whipped cream, caramel sauce, and chocolate sauce on the board near the cookies and toppings.
  5. Dust the whipped cream lightly with cinnamon to give a visible speckled finish.
  6. Keep every topping clearly separated and easy to reach, then serve the board beside mugs of hot chocolate so everyone can build their own drink.

Notes

Pro tip: Finely chop the semisweet chocolate so it melts quickly and stays smooth—whisking throughout prevents graininess. Store any leftover hot chocolate in the fridge up to 3 days; reheat gently on low, whisking until smooth. Store toppings separately in airtight containers up to 3 days (whipped cream is best for 24–48 hours). Freezing the hot chocolate is not recommended for best texture. Dietary swap: use dairy-free milk and cream alternatives to make it dairy-free while keeping the board build the same.
