Method
- Heat the oven to 375°F.
- Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
Prepare the filling
- In a large bowl, toss the apples with the granulated sugar, flour, lemon juice, cinnamon, and salt until evenly coated.
Make the topping
- In a medium bowl, stir together the oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt.
- Cut in the butter with a pastry cutter or your fingertips until the mixture forms coarse clumps.
- Stir the pecans into the oat mixture.
Assemble and bake
- Spread the apple mixture evenly in the prepared baking dish.
- Scatter the topping over the apple mixture.
- Bake for 45 to 55 minutes, until the topping is golden brown, the filling is bubbling around the edges, and a knife slides easily into the apples.
- Let the crisp rest for at least 15 minutes before serving.
Notes
Keep the butter cold so the topping forms coarse clumps. Refrigerate leftovers for up to 4 days; freezing is suitable. For a gluten-free version, use a 1:1 gluten-free flour blend in place of the all-purpose flour.
