Method
Prepare the filling
- Heat the oven to 375°F.
- Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
- Cook the ground beef in a 12-inch skillet over medium heat, breaking it into small pieces, until browned and it reaches 160°F.
- Drain excess fat from the beef.
- Stir the onion powder, green beans, cream of mushroom soup, milk, soy sauce, and black pepper into the beef until evenly combined.
Assemble and bake
- Spread the mixture in the prepared baking dish.
- Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, until hot and bubbling around the edges.
- Sprinkle the crispy fried onions evenly over the casserole.
- Bake for 5 to 8 minutes, until the onions are golden.
- Let the casserole rest for 5 minutes before serving.
Notes
For the crispiest topping, add the fried onions only for the final bake. Refrigerate leftovers for 3 to 4 days; freeze the casserole without the onion topping, then add the topping after thawing. For a gluten-free swap, use gluten-free cream of mushroom soup, tamari, and certified gluten-free crispy onions.
